The Fountain of Youth is a legendary spring that reputedly restores youth to anyone who drinks
of its waters. Tales of such a fountain, water of life, have been recounted across the world for
thousands of years as eternal youth, philosopher's stone, universal panaceas, and elixir of life.
Stories of curative waters in the mythical islands of Bimini (La Vieja) - a land of wealth and
prosperity located near the Bahamas - were prominent among the indigenous peoples of the
Caribbean. Sequene, an Arawak chief from Cuba, unable to resist the lure, traveled to Bimini,
never to return. Notorious conquistador Ponce de León searched for the fountain, and in 1513
discovered what now is Florida. It is written that supposedly the Fountain of Youth is located
in St. Augustine, protected by a secret society. In 2006, popular magician David Copperfield
claimed he discovered "a true phenomenon" amid four small cluster islands in the Exuma chain
of the Bahamas, which he bought for ~$50mil. The Fountain of Youth lives on as a metaphor for
anything that potentially increases longevity and promotes anti-aging, for our well-being.
The Turritopsis Nutricula species of Jellyfish, native to the Caribbean waters, may be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the Fountain of Youth. Scientists say, since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again -- being able to bypass death, there may be no natural limit to its life span.
They are studying how the jellyfish is able to reverse its aging process. The process is called transdifferentiation, where one type of cell is transformed into another type of cell. Some animals can undergo limited transdifferentiation and regenerate organs, such as salamanders, which can regrow limbs. This jellyfish can regenerate its entire body over and over again.
